700 organisations call on the Parliament to vote in favour of culture
700 organisations from the film, cinema, and audiovisual sector in Europe jointly urge the European Parliament to cast a vote in favour of culture on 13 December 2023 by opposing the call for future inclusion of audiovisual services in the scope of the EU Geo-blocking Regulation. Rejecting the call for future inclusion of audiovisual services is a vote in favour of preserving Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

Press release: EU Parliament resolution: Fair remuneration vital for authors’ status
Today the EU Parliament passed a resolution addressing the urgent need for an EU framework aimed at improving the social and professional situation of artists and workers in the cultural and creative sectors and calling on the Member States that have not yet introduced a specific status for artists to do so. The SAA welcomes the Parliament’s call to improve the situation for professionals within the cultural and creative sectors, in particular authors’ fair remuneration and recognition of their authorship in relation to AI.

European professional organisations of the audiovisual and cultural sectors welcome the clarifications brought by the European Parliament on Article 20 of the European Media Freedom Act, voted in plenary on 3 October, that will prevent the provision of this article being used to challenge or weaken ambitious cultural policies set out by Member States to promote European audiovisual creation.

Position: Media freedom and pluralism must equal, not undermine audiovisual policies and cultural diversity
The SAA welcomes the Commission’s proposal for a European Media Freedom Act and its objective to protect media freedom, independence and pluralism, as well as journalists. Indeed, it is crucial to make sure that the public and private media are able to freely express opinions without interference from governments. However, it is important to make sure that the EMFA regulation doesn’t create any legal uncertainties, especially those that may have adverse effects on European cultural diversity.
