Stefan Ruzowitzky

Stefan Ruzowitzky is an Austrian director who won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for his movie Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters, 2007). He is also known for Die Siebtelbauern (The Inheritors, 1998), Anatomie (Anatomy, 2000) and Die Hölle (Cold Hell, 2017). Ruzowitzky studied drama and history at the University of Vienna. In the early years of his career, he directed documentaries and commercials and also made music videos of noted artists such as N’Sync and Scorpions. More recently he directed the horror British film Patient Zero (2018), some episodes of the German Sci-Fi TV mini-series 8 Tage (2019). His film, Narziss and Goldmund (Narcissus and Goldmund), an adaptation of Hermann Hesse's famous novel, was released in March 2020. In 2021, he directed the crime thriller movie Hinterland, winner at Locarno Film Festival as Best Film the following year. In 2022, he also has directed four episodes of the TV series Barbarians, about the Teutobourg’s battle in the ninth year after A.C. Two films are currently under development, Kristallnacht and Ice Fall.
