Weina Zhao

Weina Zhao is a director, writer and producer born in Beijing and brought up in Vienna, with a strong interest in furthering the voices and narratives of people of colour and other marginalized groups. During her Master’s degree studies in sinology she started to work for documentary productions in various positions (assistant director, production assistant, location manager, translator). Since 2014 she has been directing and writing her own film and radio projects. Her feature documentary debut “Weiyena – The Long March Home” (2020, co-directed with Judith Benedikt) won several awards for best documentary. She is currently writing her fiction feature film debut " I Exist" and the sci-fi essay documentary "CAR".
She co-founded the BPOC film network GEWÄCHSHAUS in 2022, and Perilla Zine, a publication and association for the German-language Asian Diaspora (2020).
